FG Launches Credit Scheme for Laptops, Smartphones, Tablets; Opens Applications for Nigerians

The Federal Government has introduced a new consumer credit initiative that enables eligible Nigerians to acquire laptops, smartphones, tablets, and other digital devices through flexible payment plans.

The programme, known as the Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices (C.L.I.C.K.D.), allows beneficiaries to obtain digital devices on credit and repay the cost over time instead of making a one-time upfront payment.

The initiative is being implemented by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

The scheme was officially launched on Tuesday in Abuja by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, alongside the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CREDICORP, Uzoma Nwagba.

According to the Federal Government, the programme is aimed at expanding access to digital technology by helping Nigerians acquire essential devices needed for education, employment, entrepreneurship, remote work, and other technology-driven activities.

Under the initiative, beneficiaries will receive approved devices and repay the cost over an agreed period. The first phase of the programme will prioritize locally assembled laptops, reflecting the government’s commitment to boosting local manufacturing and strengthening Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.

How to Apply

Interested applicants can register by visiting the official C.L.I.C.K.D. application portal and selecting the “I’m Interested” option to access the registration form.

Applicants will be required to provide details including:

  • State of residence.
  • Employment status (employed, freelancer, self-employed, business owner, student, job seeker, or NYSC member).
  • Monthly income (optional).
  • Participation in a recognised digital talent programme such as 3MTT, Andela Learning Community, Learn2Earn, ALX Africa, HNG Internship, AltSchool Africa, Genesys Tech Hub, or others.
  • Preferred device (laptop, smartphone, tablet, or another digital device).
  • Purpose of the device, including education, professional certification, software development, content creation, business, remote work, freelancing, or school activities.
  • How they learned about the programme.

Before submitting the application, applicants must confirm that the information provided is accurate, agree to be contacted regarding their application, and consent to CREDICORP and its partners using their information to assess eligibility.

Pilot Phase Targets 3MTT Fellows

The initial rollout of the C.L.I.C.K.D. programme will involve a 1,000-laptop pilot scheme primarily targeting participants in the Federal Government’s Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme.

Speaking at the launch, CREDICORP Managing Director Uzoma Nwagba disclosed that 77 beneficiaries in Abuja had already received their laptops, while the remaining devices would be distributed across other states in phases.

The phased implementation follows a similar approach adopted during the launch of CREDICORP’s consumer credit programme in 2024, which initially served federal civil servants before expanding to more Nigerians.

Other Digital Programmes Included

Although the pilot currently focuses on 3MTT participants, the application form also accommodates members of several other digital talent initiatives, including Andela Learning Community, Learn2Earn, ALX Africa, HNG Internship, AltSchool Africa, and Genesys Tech Hub.

However, CREDICORP has not confirmed whether participants from these programmes will be included in the current pilot phase, meaning interested applicants outside the 3MTT programme may have to await further clarification.

Financial Terms Yet to Be Announced

CREDICORP has not yet released details regarding the loan’s financial structure, including applicable interest rates, repayment duration, or whether beneficiaries will be required to make an initial down payment before receiving their devices.
