A fire broke out on Sunday at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, prompting an emergency response from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
In a statement, FAAN confirmed that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) was immediately deployed to the scene and is working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading.
The authority assured the public that there have been no reported casualties or fatalities, adding that further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
The latest incident comes just months after a major fire at the airport’s Terminal 1 in February, which damaged key air-to-ground communication systems belonging to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).
The February incident disrupted flight operations, forcing air traffic controllers to rely on backup communication equipment while some inbound flights were temporarily suspended. NAMA Managing Director Farouk Umar described the damage as significant, noting that the agency had to deploy emergency systems from other locations to keep airport operations running.
The earlier fire occurred at the airport’s old terminal, which was undergoing extensive renovation at the time.
Murtala Muhammed International Airport has experienced similar incidents in recent years. In September 2023, smoke was detected at the international wing of the airport, with FAAN later attributing it to a suspected electrical fault in the ceiling of the baggage hall at Terminal 1.
As of the time of this report, authorities have not disclosed the cause of the latest fire at Terminal 2.
