Former Imo Governor Sues Kenneth Okonkwo Over Alleged Defamatory Claims

Former Imo State Governor, Achike Udenwa, has initiated legal action against African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo over comments made during a television interview.

Okonkwo had alleged that some South-East political leaders, including Udenwa, were involved in collecting money from aspirants seeking elective positions under the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

During the interview, he claimed that prominent figures such as Udenwa, Peter Obi, Onyema Ugochukwu, and other members of the South-East caucus were engaged in extorting aspirants.

In response, Udenwa, through his lawyer, Soronnadi A. Njoku (SAN), demanded an immediate retraction of the allegations, a public apology, and ₦5 billion in damages for what he described as defamatory remarks.

Meanwhile, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has also reacted to similar accusations made by Okonkwo.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate was accused of allegedly receiving or demanding about ₦10 million from political aspirants in exchange for party tickets. Okonkwo further alleged financial impropriety and irregularities in the distribution of party nominations.

Obi’s legal team has strongly denied the claims, describing them as false, malicious, and damaging to his reputation. The team subsequently demanded a public apology and ₦5 billion in compensation, warning that legal action would follow if the allegations were not withdrawn.

Speaking during an interview with NoireTV, Obi rejected the accusations, insisting that he has always conducted himself in accordance with established rules and ethical standards.

He maintained that throughout his political career, he has avoided actions that could undermine the principles of transparency and accountability he advocates.

Obi also argued that if he had intended to enrich himself through public office, he would have done so during his tenure as governor rather than leaving office with what he described as a clean record.

The dispute has added a new dimension to the growing political controversy surrounding allegations of misconduct in party nomination processes, with legal battles now emerging between the parties involved.
