Former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu Arrives Doha To Assume Ambassadorial Duties

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has arrived in Doha, Qatar, to officially begin his new assignment as Nigeria’s ambassador to the Gulf country.

Yakubu’s arrival marks a shift from his leadership role at one of Nigeria’s most closely watched institutions to a diplomatic position focused on strengthening bilateral relations, economic cooperation and international partnerships.

The former INEC chairman, who left office after completing his tenure last year, was among the ambassadors appointed by President Bola Tinubu during a major diplomatic reshuffle.

Upon his arrival at the Qatari capital on Wednesday, Yakubu was received by Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signifying Doha’s formal acceptance of his posting as Nigeria’s envoy.

The reception was attended by 13 African ambassadors, alongside key Nigerian representatives including the Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, and President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Qatar, Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba.

Yakubu’s new role comes at a time Nigeria is seeking deeper economic ties and increased foreign investment from Qatar, a country recognised for its influence in energy, diplomacy and global investment.

Energy cooperation is expected to be a major focus of his assignment, with both Nigeria and Qatar exploring opportunities in the gas sector. His role is expected to support Nigeria’s efforts under the Decade of Gas initiative while encouraging Qatari investment in the country’s energy infrastructure.

Beyond energy, the ambassador will also be expected to promote investment opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, aviation, real estate and digital technology, while advancing Nigeria’s economic reform agenda to attract international investors.

A key priority will be strengthening engagement with Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund and other major investors to convert diplomatic relations into tangible economic projects.

Yakubu’s assignment also carries a diplomatic dimension, as Qatar continues to play a growing role in global mediation efforts, particularly across Africa and the Middle East.

He is expected to work towards improving relations between Nigeria and Qatar, supporting Nigerians living in the country, enhancing consular services and creating stronger links between the diaspora community and Nigeria’s economic development.

After years overseeing Nigeria’s electoral system, Yakubu now takes on a new challenge focused on diplomacy, economic partnership and representing Nigeria’s interests abroad.
