Popular Ibadan-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat, has secured the governorship ticket of the Accord Party in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general election.
Naija News reports that the party confirmed his emergence following its governorship primary election conducted on Tuesday.
Accord’s National Deputy Secretary, Abdulraman Muhammed, stated that Hamzat was officially recognised as the party’s authentic governorship candidate after completing the screening and primary procedures.
Party officials disclosed that three aspirants initially purchased nomination forms for the governorship race. They included Hamzat, former Assistant Inspector-General of Police Fatai Owoseni, and Olakunle Busari.
According to the party, only Hamzat fulfilled all requirements within the approved timetable. Officials explained that Owoseni failed to submit the necessary documents before the deadline, while Busari reportedly appeared for screening after the exercise had concluded.
The party said Hamzat subsequently became the only qualified aspirant and was affirmed as the governorship candidate during the primary election conducted in the presence of officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
However, controversy followed the primary after another group within the party announced Busari as winner of a separate governorship primary.
The group alleged that Busari defeated Hamzat with 29,427 votes against 18,716 votes.
Reacting to the claim, Accord’s National Organising Secretary, Ibe ThankGod, dismissed reports suggesting the existence of factions within the party. He insisted that Hamzat remains the only governorship candidate recognised by the party leadership.
The party official explained that the screening exercise took place between May 19 and May 21, noting that Hamzat completed all required procedures within the stipulated period. He added that Busari’s appearance after the deadline resulted in his disqualification.
The Accord Party maintained that there is no dispute over its governorship ticket and reaffirmed Hamzat as its official candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State.
