“I Started Smoking In JSS 3” – Ebuka Obi-Uchendu Opens Up On 13-Year Addiction

Media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has opened up about his past struggle with smoking, revealing that he battled the habit for 13 years.

Speaking during a recent episode of the MENtality podcast alongside Banky W and Aproko Doctor, Ebuka disclosed that he began smoking while in junior secondary school and eventually became heavily addicted.

According to him, the habit became more serious during his university years, when he smoked as many as two packs of cigarettes daily.

“But I started smoking in JSS 3, and I smoked for 13 years. In university, I was doing about two packs a day,” he said.

Ebuka explained that quitting required conscious and intentional effort, which eventually helped him overcome the addiction.

During the conversation, Banky W also shared his personal experience, revealing that he once struggled with pornography addiction after trying to avoid promiscuity.

The singer said he initially believed it was a safer alternative to engaging with multiple women, but later realised he had simply exchanged one unhealthy habit for another.

Reacting to the discussion, Ebuka noted that many people often replace one addiction with another while attempting to break free from destructive behaviours.

Aproko Doctor further explained the psychological side of addiction, stating that many harmful habits develop as coping mechanisms for emotional pain or difficult situations.

According to him, human behaviour is often shaped by the desire to avoid pain and seek pleasure, which can lead people into unhealthy patterns.

The trio stressed the importance of self-awareness and self-discipline in recognising and overcoming harmful addictions.
