IHRC Calls for Probe Into Alleged Foreign Involvement in Benue, Plateau Crisis

The International Human Rights Commission has called for a comprehensive investigation into claims that a foreign national may be contributing to rising religious tensions in parts of Nigeria, particularly in Benue and Plateau states.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Country Director, Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, said the organisation had received reports circulating on social media alleging that a foreign individual was fueling unrest—an issue it described as serious and potentially destabilising.

The commission cautioned against jumping to conclusions, noting that such allegations, if mishandled, could escalate conflict and undermine unity within affected communities.

It urged Nigerian security agencies to carry out a thorough, impartial, and professional investigation to ascertain the facts, stressing that anyone found culpable—regardless of nationality—must be held accountable.

IHRC also called on the National Assembly to initiate legislative inquiries to uncover the truth and safeguard national interests.

The group emphasised the need for unbiased investigations, warning against prejudice and insisting that due process must be followed in handling the matter.

“If the allegations are proven, the suspect should be prosecuted accordingly, while the judiciary must ensure justice is served fairly and without bias,” the statement noted.

The organisation further expressed concern over the spread of unverified and conflicting information, particularly on international platforms, warning that such reports could damage Nigeria’s image and heighten tensions.

It advised citizens to remain calm, avoid spreading rumours, and refrain from actions or statements that could inflame ethnic or religious divisions.

IHRC also condemned hate speech and incitement to violence, describing them as threats to national cohesion.

While advocating accountability, the commission stressed the importance of respecting human rights, insisting that no individual should face punishment without proper investigation and a fair trial.

Reaffirming its commitment to peacebuilding, the organisation said it would continue working with relevant stakeholders to promote stability and unity across the country.

It concluded by urging the public to verify information before sharing and to support peaceful coexistence nationwide.
