INEC Recognises Major Agbo As NNPP National Chairman, Updates Party Leadership On Official Portal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised Major Agbo as the National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), replacing Bala Yusuf on its official records.

The development was announced during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, with checks confirming that Agbo’s name now appears as the party’s national chairman on INEC’s online portal.

In addition to the chairmanship, the electoral commission updated its records to reflect other members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), including Olaposi Oginni as National Secretary, Prince Adetoyese Omokanye as National Treasurer, Anthony Apugo as National Financial Secretary, and Asuquo Ibok as National Legal Adviser.

Leadership Crisis Takes New Turn

The latest update marks a significant development in the prolonged leadership dispute that has divided the NNPP since the 2023 general elections, with rival factions contesting control of the party.

Speaking to journalists, Agbo described INEC’s recognition as a confirmation of the legitimacy of his leadership and the beginning of a new chapter for the party.

He stated, “I am delighted to announce that INEC has completed the upload of the duly recognised National Working Committee under my leadership.

“This development confirms the legitimacy of our leadership and strengthens our readiness for future political activities. The era of betrayal is behind us, as Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima have chosen a different political path. We wish them success in their future endeavours.

“We remained confident that the courts would uphold justice, and they did not disappoint. The judiciary lived up to its responsibility by defending democracy and the rule of law.”

NNPP Shifts Focus To 2027 Elections

Following the commission’s recognition, Agbo said the party has begun preparations for the 2027 general elections.

He disclosed that the NNPP has commenced uploading the particulars of its candidates in line with INEC’s timetable after receiving the required access code to the commission’s nomination portal.

According to him, the party is committed to fielding competent, credible, and people-oriented candidates capable of delivering good governance and national development.

Agbo also reaffirmed that the NNPP remains open to Nigerians interested in contributing to positive political change.

Calls For Improved Security And Credible Elections

The NNPP chairman urged the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity through improved intelligence gathering and stronger collaboration among security institutions.

He also appealed to INEC to maintain its independence and uphold the principles of free, fair, credible, and transparent elections ahead of the 2027 polls.

According to him, public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process depends largely on the electoral commission’s integrity, professionalism, and impartiality.

Bala Yusuf Responds

Reacting to the development, Bala Yusuf confirmed that he was aware of INEC’s decision but declined to comment extensively.

He explained that he was travelling and would issue a comprehensive statement after returning to Abuja.
