The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that it is still awaiting the release of funds for the conduct of the 2027 general elections.
The commission’s National Commissioner for Voter Education and Publicity, Malam Mohammed Haruna, made the disclosure on Thursday during a cross-sectoral interactive session in Abuja organized by the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) in partnership with Legis360.
Haruna explained that although the electoral body has not yet received the required funding, preparations for the 2027 elections are already underway.
He noted that the delay remains within the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates that election funds be released to INEC no later than six months before a general election.
According to him, the commission has already begun plans to procure new election equipment, including replacing Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices and other machines that were damaged, lost, or not recovered after previous elections.
“Our Director of ICT recently returned from China regarding procurement because not all the BVAS devices used during the last general elections were recovered. Orders have to be placed, and these processes take time,” Haruna said.
He further disclosed that INEC intends to conduct mock presidential election exercises to test its technology ahead of the polls, with the aim of preventing a repeat of the technical issues that affected the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal during the 2023 presidential election.
The electoral commission had proposed a budget of ₦873.78 billion for the 2027 general elections, covering election operations, technology upgrades, and capital expenditure.
