The Kano State Government has stepped up its enforcement campaign against allegedly unauthorized developments, marking more than 50 properties, including Azman University, for investigation and possible demolition.
The exercise, conducted by the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS) under the leadership of its Director General, Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, is aimed at identifying structures lacking valid ownership documents or those built in areas not designated for development.
During the operation, officials inspected several locations across Kano, including Maiduguri Road, Rijiyar Gwangwan, Ladi Makole, Matar Fada Road, and nearby communities.
While some properties were sealed, others were marked for further assessment and verification.
According to the state government, a number of the affected structures were allegedly erected beneath high-tension power lines, on drainage corridors, and in other restricted zones, contrary to existing planning regulations.
Authorities noted that such developments pose safety risks and violate approved land-use guidelines.
Dr. Sani stated that owners of the affected properties have been directed to provide documents proving legal ownership and development approval.
He explained that property owners who present valid documentation will retain their properties without penalties, while those unable to justify their claims may face legal action.
The initiative, tagged “Operation Show Your Document,” is designed to ensure compliance with land administration and urban planning laws throughout the state.
At Azman University, academic activities reportedly continued uninterrupted despite some structures within the institution being marked pending verification of relevant documents.
The KANGIS chief noted that the university premises also contain other facilities, including a filling station and industrial operations, which will equally undergo document verification as part of the ongoing exercise.
He emphasized that the operation is not targeted at any individual, organization, or political group, but is intended to enforce planning regulations fairly and uniformly across Kano State.
Sani further maintained that all property owners, regardless of status or influence, are expected to comply with the verification process and existing land-use regulations.
The state government has also urged residents and developers to cooperate with officials by providing all necessary documentation when requested.
