Keir Starmer will resign as UK Prime Minister – Trump claims

Trump claims Keir Starmer will resign as UK Prime Minister

U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will step down from office, citing what he described as failures on immigration and energy policy.

Trump made the remarks in a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, as Starmer faces mounting political pressure at home.

“Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom,” Trump wrote. “He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well!”

The U.S. president did not provide any evidence or indicate the source of his claim regarding Starmer’s departure, and Downing Street confirmed the two leaders have not spoken over the weekend.

The comments come at a critical moment for Starmer, who is spending the weekend at Chequers considering his political future. Pressure has intensified significantly following the victory of his chief Labour Party rival, Andy Burnham, in a parliamentary by-election. More than 100 Labour lawmakers and senior figures, including Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, have reportedly urged Starmer to step aside or outline a transition timetable.

While Starmer initially insisted on Friday that he would not “walk away” and would fight any leadership challenge, cabinet insiders suggest he could announce a formal timetable for his departure as early as Monday.

If Starmer steps down, he will become the sixth British prime minister to leave office in the past 10 years, following months of declining popularity linked to strained public services, cost-of-living pressures, and internal party dissent.
