Kenneth Okonkwo: ‘I No Longer Take Peter Obi Seriously’

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has stated that he no longer considers former presidential candidate Peter Obi as serious or politically relevant following his recent move to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Okonkwo dismissed concerns that Obi’s defection could impact the ADC’s political strength ahead of the 2027 elections. He argued that the party remains focused and confident of victory.

Okonkwo criticised Obi for frequently switching political parties, alleging that he has changed affiliations three times within six months. According to him, if not for restrictions in Nigeria’s Electoral Act, Obi might have moved to yet another party.

The Nollywood actor-turned-politician maintained that Obi’s departure would not weaken the ADC’s chances in the 2027 presidential race, insisting the party and its coalition remain stable and determined.

He further questioned Obi’s consistency and leadership capacity, suggesting that his reasons for leaving parties raise concerns. Okonkwo argued that while changing parties does not necessarily define competence or character, the motivations behind such moves are crucial.

Referencing Obi’s comments about internal challenges within ADC, Okonkwo claimed the former Anambra State governor prefers to avoid difficult political situations. He then questioned whether someone who avoids challenges can effectively lead a country like Nigeria, which faces significant national issues.
