Operatives of the Inspector General of Police Safe School Initiative under the Anambra State Police Command have apprehended a suspect, Eric Nwombu, over alleged impersonation and illegal possession of examination materials belonging to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The development was confirmed in Awka through a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
According to the statement, officers recovered eight JAMB examination slips from the suspect, along with a notebook containing students’ names and examination numbers. He reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for how he obtained the documents.
The suspect was arrested following a tip-off from a cyber café in Atani, where he had been collecting 2026 JAMB examination slips from candidates who visited to check their exam centres.
He allegedly posed as a JAMB coordinator for the 2026 exercise in Atani. However, staff at the café grew suspicious of his activities and alerted the police. Upon the arrival of officers, the suspect attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended.
Police say preliminary investigations are ongoing, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further inquiry.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of public examinations and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
