Mehdi Taremi Says Political Tensions Are Overshadowing Iran’s World Cup Experience

Mehdi Taremi has admitted that the political issues surrounding Iran’s participation in the World Cup have affected the team’s preparations and dampened the excitement usually associated with the tournament.

The Iranian forward spoke ahead of his side’s opening Group G fixture against New Zealand in Los Angeles, revealing that the squad has faced a challenging buildup amid heightened tensions involving Iran and the United States.

According to Taremi, the pressure and uncertainty began long before the team arrived at the tournament.

“This kind of tension takes away from the joy of the World Cup,” he said, adding that the atmosphere had been noticeable from the outset of their journey.

Iran’s preparations were further complicated by the decision to move their training camp from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico, amid concerns related to visas, security arrangements, and the broader political climate.

Despite the off-field distractions, the 33-year-old striker stressed that the players remain committed to representing all Iranians, regardless of where they live or their political views.

“As members of the national team, we play for every Iranian, both at home and abroad,” Taremi said. “Our goal is to bring people together and give them something to celebrate. We stay focused on football and do not engage in politics.”

Iran’s opening match is set to be played in Los Angeles, a city with one of the largest Iranian communities outside the country. Demonstrations are expected around the venue, with some members of the diaspora planning protests over political issues and FIFA’s decision regarding the pre-revolutionary Lion and Sun flag.

While debate continues off the pitch, Taremi insisted that the squad’s mission remains unchanged: to unite supporters through football and provide moments of joy during a difficult period.

As Iran begins its World Cup campaign, the team faces not only expectations on the field but also the weight of external political pressures. Nevertheless, Taremi maintains that the players’ attention remains firmly fixed on the tournament and the task ahead.
