Some Nigerians stranded in South Africa amid renewed xenophobic attacks have expressed frustration over delays in evacuation arrangements, staging a protest at the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria.
The affected citizens, who are seeking to return home, accused authorities of slow processing and delays in organizing repatriation flights. In a video shared online by News Central, protesters were seen and heard chanting, “We no go gree o, we wan go,” as they demanded urgent action from Nigerian officials.
The demonstration comes as efforts continue to evacuate Nigerians who wish to leave South Africa following rising anti-immigrant tensions and fears of xenophobic violence.
The protest follows the successful evacuation of the first batch of returnees about two weeks ago. A total of 262 Nigerians arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos aboard an Air Peace flight arranged by the Federal Government.
The evacuation operation was coordinated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant agencies to assist citizens affected by the unrest in South Africa. Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and security agencies received the returnees upon arrival.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has reassured Nigerians in South Africa that all citizens who have indicated interest in returning home will be evacuated before the June 30 deadline.
The assurance was given by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, through a statement issued by her Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Magnus Eze. According to the minister, the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to protecting Nigerians abroad and ensuring that every willing citizen is safely returned home.
