The Director of the Abuja School of Social Thought and Politics, Sam Amadi, has called for a review of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, arguing that it has outlived its original purpose and should be suspended in areas facing serious security challenges.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Amadi said the programme, which was established to promote national unity, has become less effective due to changing realities in the country.
According to him, many influential Nigerians now seek preferential postings for their children to major cities such as Abuja and Lagos, undermining the scheme’s core objective of fostering national integration.
Amadi also expressed concern over the safety of corps members, citing incidents in which participants have lost their lives while serving in insecure locations. He argued that graduates should not be deployed to states where their safety cannot be guaranteed.
He maintained that the NYSC no longer addresses Nigeria’s current developmental needs and suggested that participation should be more selective rather than compulsory for all graduates.
Amadi proposed reducing the number of participants and transforming the scheme into a merit-based national service programme focused on strategic development priorities, where only qualified candidates compete for the opportunity.
He further stated that suspending deployments to unsafe states would not undermine the programme’s objectives but would instead prioritize the welfare and security of young Nigerians while allowing the scheme to be restructured to better serve the nation’s needs.
