The family of former President Olusegun Obasanjo appears divided over the 2027 Ogun State governorship race, with two of his sons throwing their weight behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Solomon Adeola (popularly known as Yayi), while their sister, former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has aligned with the opposition.
Adeola disclosed on Friday that Olugbenga Obasanjo and Olujuwon Obasanjo paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Abeokuta, where they commended his performance and pledged their support for his governorship ambition.
Sharing details of the visit on his verified Facebook page, the senator expressed appreciation to the two brothers for endorsing his candidacy, describing their visit as an honour and thanking them for their confidence in his leadership.
Contrasting Positions Within the Family
The endorsement comes just weeks after Adeola emerged as the APC’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election, making him the ruling party’s preferred choice to succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun.
However, the support from Olugbenga and Olujuwon sharply contrasts with the stance of their sister, Iyabo, who also contested for the APC governorship ticket.
Following Adeola’s emergence, Iyabo criticised the process that produced him, alleging that the party violated its internal guidelines and failed to honour an earlier consensus arrangement that she had accepted.
On June 8, she formally resigned from the APC, accusing the party leadership of repeatedly treating her unfairly and showing her a lack of respect.
Subsequent reports indicated that she had concluded plans to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where she previously built much of her political career.
Iyabo has since declared her support for the PDP’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu.
Obasanjo Yet To Declare Position
Despite the public endorsements by his sons, former President Obasanjo has remained silent on the Ogun governorship contest.
There is no indication that Olugbenga and Olujuwon spoke on behalf of their father, who has consistently maintained a distance from the APC and has rarely endorsed candidates of the ruling party in previous elections.
The former president recently fuelled political speculation after travelling to Kano, where he met with Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ahead of the 2027 general election. Neither Obasanjo nor Kwankwaso disclosed what was discussed during the meeting.
Senator Adeola currently represents Ogun West Senatorial District in the Senate. Before relocating his political base to Ogun State, he represented Lagos West Senatorial District from 2015 to 2023 after serving several terms in the House of Representatives.
