Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo has alleged that the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, along with some South-East party leaders, were involved in bribery during the party’s recent primary elections.
Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the claims during an interview on Channels Television, stating that a House of Representatives aspirant from Anambra State sent him a distress message alleging irregularities and bribery in the primaries.
He alleged that the complainant, identified as Obunike Ohaegbu, who intended to contest for the Nnewi North and Nnewi South Federal Constituency seat, reported being misled during the nomination process.
According to Okonkwo, aspirants were initially told they would only pay for expression of interest forms, but were later asked to pay additional fees ahead of the primaries. He further claimed that candidates were allegedly required to pay ₦10 million for House of Representatives tickets and ₦20 million for senatorial tickets.
He also alleged that while the primaries were ongoing, names of selected candidates had already been compiled elsewhere, claiming that Obi was present at a hotel where such lists were allegedly being prepared.
Okonkwo stated that he had received receipts of the alleged payments from the whistle-blower but did not confirm whether the matter had been reported to any electoral authority or security agency.
As of the time of filing this report, Peter Obi and the NDC leadership have not issued a response to the allegations.
