One Injured As Suspected IED Explosion Hits Lagos Market

A suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated on Monday at the Shoe Materials Market in the Mushin area of Lagos State, leaving one person injured and causing panic among traders and residents.

The incident was confirmed by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, who spoke to journalists at the scene.

According to Tijani, the police received a distress call shortly after the explosion and swiftly deployed operatives, including specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, to secure the area.

He stated that the scene was immediately cordoned off and subjected to a detailed inspection to ensure public safety.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the explosive device had allegedly been concealed beneath the passenger side of a vehicle and detonated when the vehicle was started.

The police commissioner disclosed that one individual sustained injuries from the blast and was rushed to a hospital for treatment. He added that the victim was in stable condition and responding positively to medical care.

Following the explosion, security personnel carried out an extensive search of the surrounding area but found no additional explosive devices.

Tijani urged traders, residents, and members of the public to remain calm, assuring them that the situation was under control. He also encouraged people to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious objects or activities to security agencies.

The commissioner noted that business activities could continue as normal in the market while police maintain a presence in the area and continue investigations into the incident.
