Police Arrest Enugu Nurse Over Viral Hospital Conditions Video

A nurse at Uwani General Hospital in Enugu State, Joy Ezeugwu, has been arrested by the Nigerian police after she shared a video exposing poor conditions at the medical facility.

Ezeugwu was reportedly picked up by operatives from the Police Force Headquarters Annex in Enugu.

An education technologist, Alex Onyia, confirmed the arrest in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, alleging that the operation was carried out on the instruction of the administrator of her former institution, Ezzy College of Nursing, Ifeyinwa Peace Okwudu.

According to Onyia, the arrest reflects ongoing concerns about student and staff treatment, which he described as systemic oppression within some institutions.

The nurse had earlier been suspended in April after a video she shared went viral, showing alleged poor conditions at the hospital, including lack of electricity and running water. The footage sparked widespread reactions online, with health workers lamenting the impact of the situation on patient care, especially during emergencies.

Following the viral video, Okwudu reportedly issued a demand letter seeking ₦10 million in damages, accusing Ezeugwu of violating privacy rules.

In the letter, authored by her lawyer, Ikechukwu Davidmark Ene, the administrator claimed the recording was made during an internal staff meeting where participants were instructed to submit all mobile phones and recording devices beforehand.

She further alleged that Ezeugwu denied having a phone but secretly hid one and recorded the proceedings without permission.
