Protesters Invade MTN Headquarters, Demand Lower Charges

A group of protesters, led by activist Omoyele Sowore, stormed the Abuja headquarters of MTN Nigeria, voicing anger over the rising cost of telecom services.

Chanting slogans like “MTN Ole!”, the demonstrators accused the company of unfair pricing and called for immediate reductions in charges. They insisted that Nigerians deserve better service for the amount they pay, citing cases where users reportedly paid significant sums without receiving the expected data.

One protester said many customers are experiencing similar issues and urged MTN to end what they described as exploitative practices.

Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has ruled out any economic retaliation against South Africa, despite growing concerns over xenophobic attacks on Nigerians.

He was responding to a proposal by Adams Oshiomhole, who suggested suspending the operating licenses of South African companies like MTN and DSTV in Nigeria.

Akpabio emphasized that diplomacy, rather than economic sanctions, remains the best path forward. He noted that while the Senate takes the attacks seriously, retaliatory measures against businesses would not serve Nigeria’s broader interests.

To address the situation, the Senate has approved the formation of a joint ad hoc committee with the House of Representatives. The committee will conduct a fact-finding mission and engage South African authorities in search of a lasting solution.

As part of its efforts, the delegation is expected to visit the South African Parliament, formally communicate Nigeria’s concerns, and review past agreements between both countries to ensure proper implementation.
