PSG Defeat Arsenal on Penalties to Lift 2026 UEFA Champions League Trophy

Paris Saint-Germain have been crowned UEFA Champions League champions after defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time at the Puskás Arena.

Arsenal got off to a dream start, taking the lead in just the sixth minute. Kai Havertz finished brilliantly from a Leandro Trossard assist to put the Gunners ahead and leave PSG chasing the game early on.

The French side responded strongly after the break and eventually found an equalizer. Their breakthrough came in the 65th minute when Ousmane Dembélé calmly converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review, making it 1-1 and setting up a tense finish.

Both teams created opportunities in the remaining minutes of normal time and throughout extra time, but neither could find a winning goal. Arsenal turned to Viktor Gyökeres, Gabriel Martinelli, and Eberechi Eze from the bench, while PSG introduced Bradley Barcola, Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Gonçalo Ramos as the contest stretched into extra time.

The title was ultimately decided by penalties.

Gonçalo Ramos successfully converted PSG’s opening spot-kick before Gyökeres replied for Arsenal. Désiré Doué scored PSG’s second, but Eze missed his attempt. Nuno Mendes then failed to extend PSG’s advantage, allowing Declan Rice to level the shootout at 2-2.

Achraf Hakimi restored PSG’s lead and Martinelli responded to keep Arsenal in contention. Lucas Beraldo then converted PSG’s fourth penalty, leaving Gabriel Magalhães needing to score to keep Arsenal alive. The defender missed his effort, handing PSG a 4-3 shootout victory and their first Champions League title.

The triumph capped an outstanding European campaign for PSG, while Arsenal were left heartbroken after falling just one kick short of forcing sudden death in the final.
