Some Lawmakers Stay Silent In Parliament Yet Keep Winning Elections – Saraki

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has urged Nigerians to hold elected officials accountable by closely monitoring their performance and demanding greater representation beyond just evaluating the President.

Speaking during an interview with Vanguard, Saraki stressed the need for citizens to pay attention to the activities of their lawmakers and regularly assess their contributions in the National Assembly.

According to him, increased public scrutiny of legislators’ records would improve the quality of lawmaking, as elected representatives would be compelled to become more active and responsive.

The former Kwara State governor expressed concern that some lawmakers complete entire legislative terms without making meaningful contributions during plenary sessions, yet continue to secure re-election.

Saraki noted that while some legislators rarely participate in debates or speak on the floor of the National Assembly, they often retain their seats every election cycle. In contrast, lawmakers who actively engage in legislative duties sometimes struggle to win re-election due to local political considerations.

He argued that one of the most impactful reforms for the National Assembly would not require government spending but rather a more informed and engaged electorate that evaluates candidates based on their legislative performance.

The former Senate President also emphasized the importance of electoral reforms, maintaining that strong institutions can only emerge when competent and capable individuals are elected into public office.

According to Saraki, ensuring that the electoral process produces the right leaders is fundamental to strengthening democratic institutions and improving governance across the country.

He therefore called on Nigerians to focus more attention on the records and effectiveness of their representatives, insisting that accountability at all levels of government is essential for a stronger democracy.
