Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has brushed aside criticism of his administration on social media following his resounding victory in the state’s governorship election.
Speaking on Sunday after securing a second term, Oyebanji maintained that elections are won through tangible performance and grassroots engagement rather than online commentary.
“There are no polling units on social media,” the governor declared.
Drawing a comparison between governance and farming, Oyebanji said leaders who have worked diligently should expect rewards when it is time for the people to make their choice at the polls.
“A farmer who has diligently tilled the ground does not interfere on the day of harvest. Some people who have not done anything are busy on social media,” he said.
According to the governor, politicians who fail to connect with the electorate often resort to media attacks and online campaigns against governments.
“If you have done well, people will vote for you. But if you don’t have anything to say other than going to media houses to grant interviews and spread falsehoods against the government, then you remain on social media trying to whip up sentiments. Yesterday was their day of reckoning,” he added.
Oyebanji recorded a landslide victory, winning all 16 local government areas in the June 20 governorship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that the governor secured 319,224 votes, defeating Wole Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 40,543 votes. Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) finished third with 12,872 votes.
INEC also disclosed that 384,940 voters were accredited for the election, with 375,777 valid votes cast and 6,332 ballots rejected.
