Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has admitted that he misses the camaraderie and atmosphere of the Nigerian national team months after bringing his international career to an end.
The defender, who retired from international football in December 2025 after a decade of service, shared his thoughts during an appearance on the Bassey Talks podcast alongside current Super Eagles stars Ola Aina, Alex Iwobi, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey.
Troost-Ekong said that while he has no regrets about stepping away from international football, he still misses the close bond he shared with his teammates.
According to him, the Super Eagles became more than just a team—they became family.
The 32-year-old revealed that he often reflects on memorable moments in national colours and sometimes feels the urge to return whenever he watches the team play.
Despite those feelings, he emphasized that he remains satisfied with his decision and is at peace with retirement.
Troost-Ekong ended his international career shortly after Nigeria’s failed bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Born in the Netherlands, he made his Super Eagles debut under the late Stephen Keshi in June 2015 and went on to become a pillar of Nigeria’s defence. Alongside Leon Balogun, he formed the famous “Oyibo Wall” partnership that anchored the national team for years.
One of the highlights of his career came at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, where he captained Nigeria to the final and scored three goals. Although the Super Eagles finished as runners-up, Troost-Ekong was named the tournament’s Best Player and became the highest-scoring defender in AFCON history with five goals.
He retired with 83 appearances and eight goals for Nigeria, while also winning a bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and claiming both silver and bronze medals at the Africa Cup of Nations.
