Two Nigerians Reportedly Killed in South Africa

Two Nigerian nationals, Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpeyong Andrew, have reportedly lost their lives in separate incidents in South Africa.

According to Nigeria’s Consul-General in Johannesburg, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, the victims were allegedly killed by personnel of the South African National Defence Force in Port Elizabeth.

Okey-Uche noted that the incidents have intensified concerns about the safety of Nigerians and other foreign nationals living in the country. She said the deaths have left the victims’ families, the Nigerian community, and diplomatic missions in deep shock.

She also cautioned against the growing trend of stereotyping Nigerians as criminals, stressing the dangers of such generalizations.

The Consul-General called on South African authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. She emphasized that, regardless of any allegations, due process must be followed, with every individual presumed innocent and granted a fair hearing in a court of law.

She urged Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on their daily activities while investigations continue.

Preliminary reports indicate that Emmanuel died from injuries allegedly sustained during a severe assault by military personnel on April 20, 2026.

In a separate case, Andrew was reportedly apprehended on April 19 in the Booysens area of Pretoria following an altercation with members of the Tshwane Metro Police. His body was later discovered at the Pretoria Central Mortuary under unclear circumstances.

A formal case has been opened with the South African Police Service, and investigations are ongoing. The Consulate welcomed this development, urging that the process be transparent, thorough, and impartial. It also called on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate to expedite its inquiry and establish the full facts.

Okey-Uche affirmed that the Consulate is actively engaging with relevant South African authorities and closely monitoring the situation. She added that support is being provided to the families of the deceased.

She extended condolences to the bereaved families and reaffirmed the Consulate’s commitment to protecting the welfare and rights of Nigerians abroad.
