UPDATE : ASP Usman Sacked Over Killing of Mene Ogidi in Effurun – IGP Disudismissal

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has confirmed the dismissal of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and other officers linked to the killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

Disu disclosed that the affected officers will also face prosecution after being removed from the force. He made this known while addressing journalists at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

Describing the April 26 incident as “criminal and unprofessional,” the IGP stressed that such behavior is unacceptable within the Nigeria Police Force.

He explained that ASP Usman, identified as the principal suspect, alongside other involved officers, had been transferred from the Delta State Command to Abuja for disciplinary action. The Force Disciplinary Committee immediately commenced proceedings, while three inspectors were tried through an Orderly Room Tribunal.

According to Disu, investigations revealed that Usman breached Force Order 247, which governs the use of firearms, as well as other standard operational procedures. Based on these findings, police authorities recommended the immediate dismissal of all officers involved and directed that they be handed over for prosecution on charges of unlawful homicide.

The recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval.

The IGP distanced the police institution from the actions of the officers, emphasizing that they acted outside established rules and the core mandate of the force.

“No uniform is a license to kill,” Disu stated.

He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured Nigerians that justice would be pursued transparently. Residents of Delta State and the wider public were urged to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

“The era of impunity is over,” he added.

The incident had sparked outrage after a viral video showed the victim restrained with his hands tied behind his back before he was shot at close range by a police officer. The officer was later identified as ASP Usman and subsequently arrested and moved to Abuja for disciplinary action.
