The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, along with four members of his team over the killing of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
Force spokesperson, Anthony Placid, confirmed the development, stating that the affected officers will also face prosecution.
The action followed an internal investigation into the incident, which sparked widespread outrage on social media. Ogidi, 28, was reportedly killed during a police operation carried out by officers attached to the Effurun Area Command.
Authorities had earlier disclosed that the operation took place on April 26, 2026, after intelligence suggested that Ogidi had been apprehended while attempting to dispatch a package allegedly containing a Beretta pistol and ammunition.
After the incident, Usman and his team were detained and transferred to the Force Headquarters for disciplinary proceedings. The case was reviewed by the Force Disciplinary Committee, which examined the conduct of the officers.
Following its findings, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved their dismissal, with the recommendation forwarded to the Police Service Commission for confirmation.
Investigations revealed that the officers breached rules governing the use of firearms and acted outside established procedures. As a result, the committee recommended their immediate removal from service.
Police authorities added that the dismissed officers will be handed over for prosecution on charges related to unlawful homicide, stressing that no officer has the right to take a life outside the bounds of the law.
