A member of the National Assembly, Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (sometimes spelled Moguno in media reports), has reportedly warned that lawmakers could initiate impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu if funds approved by the legislature are not released.
The senator made the remark while addressing the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, during a legislative session focused on government funding and budget implementation.
According to the lawmaker, the executive arm has a constitutional responsibility to release funds duly approved by the National Assembly, stressing that continued delays could undermine governance and the implementation of key government projects.
He reportedly warned that if the approved allocations were not released, the National Assembly would be left with no option but to invoke its constitutional powers.
“We will impeach Tinubu if he does not release the money,” the senator was quoted as saying during the session.
The comments came amid concerns over the pace of budget implementation and the release of funds for critical government programmes.
The senator urged the Finance Ministry to ensure that approved allocations are promptly disbursed to enable ministries, departments and agencies to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency and the Federal Ministry of Finance had not publicly responded to the senator’s remarks.
