Xenophobia : Recall Mandela Thanked Nigeria for Anti-Apartheid Support During Historic Visit {VIDEO}

Three months after his release from prison in 1990, South African anti-apartheid leader and future president, Nelson Mandela, paid a historic visit to Nigeria, where he expressed deep appreciation for the country’s unwavering support for the struggle against apartheid.

Mandela, who spent 27 years behind bars before gaining freedom on February 11, 1990, arrived in Nigeria as part of a diplomatic tour aimed at rallying international support for South Africa’s transition to democracy.

During his visit, Mandela praised Nigeria for its financial, diplomatic, and material contributions to the anti-apartheid movement, describing the country as one of Africa’s strongest allies in the fight against racial oppression.

Addressing government officials and supporters, Mandela acknowledged the sacrifices made by Nigeria and its people in supporting the liberation struggle. He noted that Nigeria consistently stood with South Africans during some of the darkest years of apartheid and played a leading role in mobilizing African and international opposition to the racist regime.

Nigeria was among the countries that provided significant funding to anti-apartheid organizations and championed sanctions against the apartheid government. The country also offered scholarships, humanitarian assistance, and political backing to South African activists and exiles.

Mandela’s visit was widely celebrated across Nigeria, with many viewing it as recognition of the country’s longstanding commitment to African unity and freedom.

The historic trip further strengthened ties between Nigeria and South Africa, laying the foundation for a relationship that would continue after the end of apartheid and Mandela’s eventual election as South Africa’s first democratically elected Black president in 1994.

Many Nigerians continue to regard Mandela’s visit and expression of gratitude as one of the most significant moments in the history of African solidarity and the continent’s struggle for justice and equality.
