Cape Verde delivered one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday, June 15, after holding Spain to a goalless draw in their opening Group H encounter.
Competing in their first-ever World Cup, the African nation produced a resilient performance to earn a memorable point against the two-time world champions. The result leaves Group H wide open and adds to Spain’s struggles at the tournament, with the Europeans now managing only one win in their last seven World Cup matches.
Spain controlled possession for most of the game but found it difficult to break down Cape Verde’s well-organized defence. Defender Roberto “Pico” Lopes was instrumental at the back, leading a disciplined defensive display that frustrated Luis de la Fuente’s side.
Cape Verde nearly stunned Spain before halftime when Dailon Livramento attempted an audacious effort from inside his own half. Spain responded with a series of chances, with Ferran Torres striking the crossbar after a headed pass from Marc Cucurella. Goalkeeper Vozinha then produced an excellent save to deny Mikel Oyarzabal from the rebound.
The second half followed a similar pattern, as Spain dominated the ball but lacked the creativity needed to find a breakthrough. Torres again threatened when a mishit cross drifted dangerously toward goal, but the experienced Vozinha reacted quickly to keep the scores level.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente introduced teenage star Lamine Yamal in search of inspiration, and the youngster immediately injected pace and urgency into the attack. However, Cape Verde’s defence remained resolute, while Vozinha continued to make crucial saves, including one from substitute Mikel Merino.
As the match entered its final stages, Spain piled on the pressure. Oyarzabal came close to scoring, only for Lopes to make a vital block. Cape Verde, however, nearly snatched a dramatic victory in stoppage time when Diney Borges directed a powerful header toward goal, forcing Unai Simón into an important save.
The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among the Cape Verde players and fans as the tournament debutants secured a historic point against one of the World Cup favourites.
