Tunisia have parted ways with head coach Sabri Lamouchi after the Carthage Eagles suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Tunisia Football Federation acted swiftly in the aftermath of Sunday’s crushing loss, deciding to relieve Lamouchi of his duties as the team seeks to revive its campaign in the tournament.
Former Tunisia manager Mondher Kebaier is expected to assume interim responsibility for the national team for the remainder of the World Cup.
Tunisia’s focus now shifts to a crucial Group Stage showdown against Japan on June 21, a match they must win to keep their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage alive.
Lamouchi’s tenure lasted less than six months after he was appointed in January 2026. During his short spell in charge, results failed to improve, with the former Ivory Coast international overseeing just four matches.
Under his leadership, Tunisia managed only one goal while conceding 11. His reign began with a goalless draw against Canada, followed by a narrow 1-0 loss to Austria. A heavy 5-0 defeat to Belgium further dented confidence before the World Cup.
Any hopes of turning things around on football’s biggest stage were quickly dashed as Sweden dominated Tunisia and secured a comprehensive 5-1 victory, a result that ultimately brought Lamouchi’s time in charge to an end.
With Kebaier set to take over, Tunisia face an urgent task to regroup and improve ahead of their decisive encounter with Japan.
