Seventeen players will enter the quarter-final stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup facing the possibility of suspension, with another yellow card set to rule them out of a potential semi-final.
According to FIFA’s disciplinary rules, any player who receives a second caution of the tournament during the quarter-finals will automatically miss the semi-finals if their team advances.
The number of players at risk increased after the conclusion of the Round of 16 on Tuesday, leaving several key stars walking a disciplinary tightrope.
Morocco have the highest number of players in danger of suspension, with Issa Diop, Achraf Hakimi, Redouane Halhal and Bilal El Khannouss all needing to avoid another booking to remain eligible for the next round.
England are also dealing with a similar concern, as Jude Bellingham, Nico O’Reilly, Declan Rice and Marc Guehi are each one yellow card away from serving a suspension should the Three Lions reach the semi-finals.
In addition, England will be without defender Jarell Quansah for Saturday’s quarter-final clash against Norway after he received a red card during the team’s dramatic 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16.
France also have two players under disciplinary threat, with Manu Koné and Michael Olise carrying yellow cards into the last eight.
Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka, Denis Zakaria and Miro Muheim are also at risk, while Spain forward Ferran Torres, Norway winger Antonio Nusa, Belgium defender Brandon Mechele and Argentina full-back Gonzalo Montiel complete the list of players who must avoid another caution.
All 17 players will need to navigate the quarter-finals without picking up another yellow card if they hope to remain available for a possible semi-final appearance.
