The Premier League is set to enforce new and stricter measures aimed at curbing time-wasting during matches starting from the 2026/27 season.
Under the proposed rules, teams will face immediate in-game punishment for delaying restarts. If a side takes too long over a goal kick, the opposition will be awarded a corner kick. Similarly, excessive delay on a throw-in will result in possession being handed directly to the opposing team.
In addition, new regulations will apply to substitutions. Any substituted player must leave the pitch within 10 seconds. Failure to do so will trigger a penalty where the incoming substitute is forced to wait 60 seconds before entering the field, leaving their team temporarily reduced to 10 players.
The reforms are part of broader efforts to speed up the game, improve match flow, and discourage tactical delays commonly used to manage leads.
Football analysts say the changes could significantly alter game management strategies, forcing teams to rethink how they handle late-match situations and substitutions.
