Nigeria’s Super Falcons have arrived in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they will begin the defence of their continental title with hopes of securing a record-extending 11th championship.
The team, led by head coach Justine Madugu, travelled from Casablanca after completing a successful 10-day training camp. They wrapped up their preparations with a confidence-boosting 2-1 victory over Tanzania’s Twiga Stars in an international friendly.
The nine-time African champions made a fashionable entrance into the Moroccan capital, wearing coordinated green-and-white tie-dye traditional outfits complemented by matching headwraps.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade and forward Esther Okoronkwo were on target in the win over Tanzania, giving the squad added confidence ahead of the tournament.
The Super Falcons also unveiled a commemorative jersey featuring 10 stars surrounding the national team crest, symbolising Nigeria’s 10 previous WAFCON titles. The special kit debuted during the friendly against Tanzania, with the team aiming to earn an 11th star by lifting the trophy in Morocco.
Nigeria will play all their Group C fixtures in Rabat. The Super Falcons begin their title defence against tournament newcomers Malawi at Al Madina Stadium on Tuesday before facing Zambia at the same venue. Their final group-stage encounter will be against Egypt at the Olympic Stadium.
However, the team’s preparations have also been overshadowed by allegations of theft during their stay in Casablanca.
Forward Esther Okoronkwo claimed on social media that cash was stolen from her hotel room at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca while the team was in camp. She initially alleged that $500 had been taken before later revising the amount to $700. Okoronkwo further claimed that some of her teammates were also affected and accused housekeeping staff of being responsible.
She also alleged that hotel officials failed to provide satisfactory explanations after the incident was reported.
The Super Falcons’ Media Officer, Mary Cathryn, confirmed that complaints had been lodged by members of the team and said the matter had been reported to the appropriate Moroccan authorities for investigation.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Marriott Hotel Casablanca, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had not issued official statements regarding the allegations.
