Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a convincing 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C fixture on Wednesday.
The defending champions needed a win to keep their title defence on course and produced an impressive performance in Rabat to book their place in the knockout stage.
Captain Asisat Oshoala gave Nigeria the lead in the 21st minute from the penalty spot after a VAR review confirmed a handball inside the Egyptian penalty area.
The Super Falcons dominated proceedings for most of the match, extending their advantage with a series of well-worked goals against an Egyptian side that had already been eliminated from the competition.
Egypt managed to score twice—once just before halftime and again from the penalty spot late in the game—but Nigeria remained firmly in control. Rasheedat Ajibade and Joy Omewa added late goals in stoppage time to complete the emphatic 6-2 triumph.
Speaking after the victory, Oshoala praised her teammates for their resilience.
“We knew what was at stake. We stayed together, fought for each other and got the result we needed,” she said.
Head coach Justine Madugu also commended his players for rising to the occasion.
“The players showed great determination. We knew we had to win and they delivered under pressure,” the coach said.
The victory capped an impressive turnaround for Nigeria after suffering a shock defeat to Malawi in their opening group match.
The Super Falcons responded with back-to-back victories over Zambia and Egypt to finish strongly and continue their quest for another WAFCON title.
