Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally petitioned the National Assembly to launch a comprehensive investigation into the multi-billion dollar infrastructure contracts awarded by the Tinubu administration.
The controversy centers on an estimated $20 billion worth of highway projects managed by Hitech Construction Company, a firm owned by prominent business mogul Gilbert Chagoury. Atiku alleges that the critical infrastructure deals were finalized through non-competitive bidding processes, a move he argues directly violates the Public Procurement Act.
The petition specifically targets the financing and execution structures of the high-profile Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the newly initiated Sokoto-Badagry road network.
According to the opposition leader, bypassing open competitive bidding deprives Nigerian taxpayers of transparency and fair value. Representatives for the federal government have previously defended the partnership with Hitech, citing the firm’s technical capability and unique financing models.
However, the Presidency has not yet issued a formal rebuttal to Atiku’s latest legislative demand.
Public policy analysts note that this dispute could spark intense legislative debates as national assembly members return from recess.
The outcome of a potential probe could heavily influence how future public-private partnership (PPP) infrastructure agreements are managed across the country.
