Former British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has announced his resignation as a Member of Parliament, bringing his 11-year parliamentary career to an end.
Starmer announced on Tuesday that he would step down as the parliamentarian for Holborn and St Pancras in London, a decision that will trigger a by-election in the constituency.
The former Labour leader said he believes the time had come to leave domestic politics and turn his attention to international issues, including defence, security, trade and technology.
In a statement shared on social media, Starmer said: “It is now time to step aside and focus on other issues: international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world.”
Recall that Starmer had resigned as Labour Party leader and British Prime Minister earlier in the summer after a turbulent two years in office.
The former prime minister, who previously worked as a human rights lawyer, became Labour leader in 2020 and led the party to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election.
However, his tenure as prime minister was marked by declining popularity and mounting pressure from members of his own party.
Andy Burnham subsequently emerged as prime minister in July, taking over from Starmer after his resignation
