NELFUND Issues Fresh Warning on Student Loans

BY SNOW TV NEWS DESK
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has cautioned students against applying for education loans they do not genuinely need. The Fund emphasized that the scheme is voluntary and designed only to help those who cannot afford the cost of their studies.

In a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday and signed by Director of Strategic Communications Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, NELFUND clarified that students who can pay their school fees and other educational expenses independently are not required to apply.

The Fund noted that the student loan program was introduced to prevent financial hardship from blocking eligible Nigerians from accessing higher education. Making the loans compulsory for every student, regardless of financial status, would undermine this purpose.

“The student loan scheme is a support mechanism, not an obligation,” the statement said.

NELFUND urged tertiary institutions, student leaders, and other stakeholders to share accurate information about the scheme and to guide only those students who truly need assistance through the application process.

The loans are interest-free, making them a helpful option for students facing genuine financial difficulties. However, the Fund stressed that they must still be repaid in accordance with the Student Loans Act. Applicants were advised to fully understand the terms and conditions before applying to avoid future repayment challenges.

NELFUND reiterated that its primary goal is to ensure no eligible Nigerian student is denied educational opportunities simply because they cannot afford the cost of their studies.

SNOW TV NEWS EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
NELFUND’s latest warning is a timely reminder that student loans are meant to open doors, not create unnecessary debt. By stressing that the scheme is voluntary and targeted only at those in genuine need, the Fund is protecting both students and the sustainability of the program. Clear communication from schools and student leaders will be key to ensuring the loans reach the right people—and that young Nigerians borrow wisely.
