UPDATE: Pope Leo XIV Declared Cancer-Free After Successful Lung Surgery

BY SNOW TV NEWS DESK

Pope Leo XIV has been declared cancer-free following surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his right lung, with his medical team confirming that he does not require any further treatment.

According to a statement issued by his physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, and surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, subsequent medical tests showed that the cancer was localized.

“A subsequent oncological evaluation has confirmed that no further therapy is required,” the doctors stated.

The Vatican announced the Pope’s cancer diagnosis last week after he was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for surgery to remove a lung nodule. The 71-year-old pontiff was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer, and underwent a procedure lasting approximately 90 minutes, during which surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung.

Pope Leo was discharged from the hospital over the weekend, four days after the operation. He briefly stopped to acknowledge well-wishers as he departed the hospital grounds.

Following his discharge, the pontiff has continued his recovery at the Vatican while gradually resuming his public engagements.

On Wednesday, he held his first weekly general audience since leaving the hospital at St. Peter’s Square. He waved to the large crowd of worshippers from the popemobile and offered blessings to children lifted towards him by members of the gathering.

The Pope’s recovery comes as he prepares for a planned trip to South America in early November, according to the Vatican.

The announcement that no additional cancer treatment is necessary is an encouraging development for the pontiff and the Catholic faithful worldwide as he continues his recovery.
