JUST IN: Court Disqualifies Uzodinma as APC Senatorial Candidate for Imo West

SNOW TV NEWS DESK
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma to stop parading himself as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Imo West Senatorial District election scheduled for January 16, 2027.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu issued the order on Thursday after ruling that Uzodinma did not win the party’s senatorial primary election conducted on May 18 and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the court, evidence presented during the proceedings established that former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha secured the majority of votes cast in the primary and should therefore be recognized as the winner.

The judge consequently directed the APC to submit Okorocha’s name to INEC as its lawful candidate for the Imo West Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general elections.

INEC was also ordered to accept Okorocha as the party’s legitimate candidate and publish his name accordingly.

Justice Egwuatu further held that most of the documents used in Uzodinma’s nomination were fabricated, describing the alleged irregularities as violations of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act.

The ruling represents a significant development in the APC’s preparations for the forthcoming general elections and could reshape the political contest in Imo West.

Uzodinma, who currently serves as governor of Imo State, is expected to complete his tenure on January 14, 2028.

Further details of the judgment and any possible legal response from the affected parties are awaited.

SNOW TV EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
The ruling underscores the importance of internal democracy and compliance with electoral laws in Nigeria’s political parties. Party primaries are intended to provide a credible process for selecting candidates, and allegations of manipulated results or forged nomination documents raise serious concerns about electoral integrity.

However, the broader significance of the judgment will depend on its implementation and any subsequent legal challenges. The APC, INEC, and the affected politicians must respect due process while ensuring that the party’s candidate selection reflects the law and the outcome established by the court.

Ultimately, credible primaries are essential to strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy. Political influence should never take precedence over transparent procedures and the rule of law.
