The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast three days of dust haze and thunderstorms across different parts of the country from Friday to Sunday, warning residents to take necessary precautions against possible weather-related hazards.
In its weather outlook released on Thursday in Abuja, the agency predicted slight dust haze across most northern states, with moderate haze expected in parts of Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Kaduna.
On Friday, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are expected over parts of Taraba State. The North-Central region, including Kogi, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory, and Benue, may also experience thunderstorms later in the afternoon or evening.
Across the South, cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, with possible light rainfall in parts of Delta and Bayelsa. NiMet also forecast moderate rainfall and thunderstorms over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Osun, and Ekiti, as well as the Southeast and South-South regions.
For Saturday, sunny and hazy conditions are expected across the North, while parts of the North-Central region may experience isolated thunderstorms later in the day. Southern states are likely to witness cloudy morning conditions, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in several areas.
On Sunday, slight dust haze is expected across most northern states, while the North-Central region will experience sunny skies with patches of clouds. The South may experience morning cloudiness, followed by light rainfall in parts of Imo, Abia, and Anambra, as well as other areas of the Southwest and South-South.
NiMet advised people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to take precautions against dust particles in the atmosphere.
It also warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms, urging residents to secure loose objects, avoid standing under tall trees, and disconnect electrical appliances during storms.
The agency further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for proper flight planning and encouraged the public to monitor updates through its official website.
SNOW TV EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
NiMet’s forecast highlights the need for Nigerians to take weather warnings seriously, particularly during periods of widespread thunderstorms and dust haze. These conditions can disrupt transportation, affect outdoor activities, and pose health risks, especially to people with respiratory illnesses.
Beyond issuing forecasts, timely public awareness and compliance with safety advisories are essential to reducing weather-related accidents and property damage. Residents, transport operators, and relevant authorities should therefore remain alert and take preventive measures throughout the three-day period.
