Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born leader of the Catholic Church, has made history by casting his vote in the United States midterm elections, marking what is believed to be the first known instance of a sitting pope participating in a political election.
The Vatican confirmed on Friday that the pontiff, who was born in Chicago, submitted his ballot by mail, exercising his constitutional right as a US citizen. According to the Vatican, Pope Leo believes citizens have both the right and responsibility to participate in democratic processes.
His participation comes amid heightened political tensions between the Vatican and US President Donald Trump. The two leaders have repeatedly disagreed over Washington’s immigration policies and the war involving Iran. Trump previously criticized the pope’s position on crime and foreign policy, while Leo maintained that he was not intimidated by the president.
In April, following Trump’s threat against Iran, the pope appealed for peace and encouraged citizens to contact political representatives to reject war and violence.
Ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, Leo had also urged Catholics to abandon political indifference and become actively involved in addressing societal challenges.
Before becoming pope, Robert Francis Prevost, as he was known, participated in several US primary elections, according to records cited by The New York Times. He also voted during his nearly two decades of missionary service in Peru, where he holds dual citizenship.

Pope Leo XIV’s decision to vote is significant beyond its historical novelty. It reinforces the principle that religious leadership does not necessarily require withdrawal from civic responsibility. His action also sends a message about the importance of democratic participation at a time of deep political division in the United States.
However, the pope’s involvement could attract political interpretations, particularly given his public disagreements with President Trump. Nevertheless, voting is a personal democratic right, not necessarily an endorsement of any political party or candidate.
Ultimately, Leo’s historic vote highlights the relationship between faith, citizenship, and public responsibility. His broader message is clear: citizens should not remain passive spectators in decisions that shape their societies.
