The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as its substantive General Secretary, marking a historic achievement as he becomes the first Nigerian to hold the position since the organization was founded in 1957.

‘

Adamu’s appointment comes after he was named interim general secretary in March, following the resignation of his predecessor, Swiss-Congolese official Veron Mosengo-Omba. His substantive appointment received approval from CAF’s Executive Committee.

The 40-year-old is not new to the organization’s administrative structure, having previously served as CAF’s Director of Competitions. During his time in the role, he was involved in organizing major African football competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the CAF Champions League.

In his new capacity, Adamu will be responsible for coordinating CAF’s daily administrative activities, overseeing legal affairs, and ensuring that decisions taken by the Executive Committee are effectively implemented.

African football continues to face demands for stronger governance, better organization, and greater accountability. Adamu will therefore have an opportunity to contribute to addressing these concerns while strengthening CAF’s administrative structures.

He brings valuable experience in football management and sports governance to the position. Adamu holds a FIFA master’s degree in management, law, and the humanities of sport. His journey in football administration dates back to the early 2010s, when he established the Copa Lagos beach soccer tournament.

His confirmation is a landmark development for Nigeria, strengthening the country’s representation at the highest administrative level of African football.

A Historic Opportunity and a Major Responsibility
Samson Adamu’s emergence as CAF General Secretary is a significant milestone for Nigerian football and the country’s influence in continental sports administration. His appointment ends decades of waiting for a Nigerian to occupy one of the most important administrative offices in African football.

However, the significance of this achievement extends beyond national recognition. The position comes with enormous responsibilities, particularly in an organization tasked with managing competitions, enforcing regulations, and overseeing the development of football across the continent.

For Nigeria, his appointment is a source of national pride. For Adamu, it is an opportunity to demonstrate that this historic breakthrough can deliver lasting value to African football. Ultimately, history will remember not only that he became the first Nigerian CAF General Secretary but also the impact he made during his tenure.
