CAF Celebrates Nigeria’s Flamingos Over U-17 World Cup Semifinal Qualification

SNOW TV NEWS DESK
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, after they secured a place in the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Nigeria booked their place in the last four following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Venezuela in Sunday’s quarterfinal encounter at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé.

Captain Azeezat Oduntan emerged as the match winner, calmly converting an 89th-minute penalty after top scorer Oluebube Umejiaku was brought down inside the penalty area. The referee’s decision was confirmed following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.

The victory marks Nigeria’s return to the competition’s semifinals, matching their achievement in 2022, when they finished with a bronze medal.

CAF Women’s Football celebrated the achievement in a post on its official X account, praising the Flamingos for reaching the last four.

Nigeria are now the only African team remaining in the competition after Ghana suffered a 1-0 quarterfinal defeat to Japan.

The Flamingos will face Brazil on Wednesday, November 4, at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat. Brazil secured their semifinal ticket with a 2-1 comeback victory over China.

Nigeria’s impressive progress comes after an opening 2-1 defeat to Poland. The team subsequently bounced back with four consecutive victories against Puerto Rico (2-0), defending champions North Korea (3-1), Mexico (2-1), and Venezuela (1-0).

SNOW TV EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
The Flamingos’ semifinal qualification is a significant achievement for Nigerian women’s football and a source of encouragement for the country’s grassroots development efforts. Their ability to recover from an opening defeat and record four successive victories demonstrates resilience, determination, and growing confidence.

However, the narrow victory over Venezuela also highlights the importance of maintaining concentration and improving attacking efficiency, particularly against stronger opposition.

The upcoming encounter with Brazil will be a major test of Nigeria’s quality and tactical discipline. With a place in the final at stake, the Flamingos must combine their fighting spirit with clinical finishing.

Beyond the tournament, this achievement should serve as a reminder of the need for sustained investment in youth women’s football, proper development programs, and international exposure for emerging talents.
