The Lagos State Government has engaged 250 young people from 125 riverine and coastal communities in a dialogue aimed at addressing developmental challenges and promoting inclusive governance across the state.
The engagement, organized by the Blue Lagos Sustainability Initiative in collaboration with the New Generation Directorate, took place last week at the Badore Ferry Terminal, Ajah, Lagos.
The Lagos Riverine Community Youth Leaders Dialogue provided a platform for young people to discuss issues affecting their communities, identify development priorities, and recommend practical solutions to government authorities.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, stressed the importance of involving young people in decisions concerning the development of coastal and riverine communities.
Emmanuel noted that sustainable development could only be achieved when the government listened to residents, understood their needs, and incorporated their concerns into policies and implementation plans.
During the interactive session, participants identified several challenges requiring urgent government attention. These included inadequate educational and healthcare facilities, unemployment, poor transportation networks, environmental concerns, insufficient infrastructure, and limited access to youth empowerment programs.
They also called for improved access to essential social services and greater representation of underserved communities in government development initiatives.
Emmanuel acknowledged the concerns raised by the participants and assured them that their recommendations would be forwarded to relevant government authorities for consideration and possible action.
In her goodwill message, the Director of the New Generation Directorate, Damilola James, urged young people to become actively involved in governance and community development.
She encouraged the participants to move beyond criticizing government policies by contributing ideas, engaging constructively with public officials, and participating in decision-making processes.
James also emphasized the importance of unity, responsible leadership, and sustained engagement in addressing challenges affecting their communities.
Key discussion areas included employment, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, environmental protection, infrastructure, and improved livelihoods.
The Blue Lagos Sustainability Initiative is a community-focused non-governmental organization committed to promoting inclusive governance, environmental protection, and sustainable development in Lagos’ riverine and coastal communities.
SNOW TV EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
The engagement represents an important step towards giving young people in Lagos’ riverine communities a voice in governance. However, meaningful development requires more than dialogue and promises.
Communities facing poor healthcare, inadequate schools, unemployment, and transportation difficulties need measurable government intervention. Their geographical isolation should not make them less deserving of essential public services.
The Lagos State Government should therefore translate the recommendations from this meeting into clear development programs with timelines, funding, and regular monitoring.
Furthermore, youth leaders should be involved in tracking implementation to ensure accountability.
Ultimately, the success of this initiative will not be determined by the number of participants at the dialogue but by tangible improvements in the living conditions of the communities they represent.
