Nollywood actor Uche Odoputa has recounted the painful circumstances surrounding the abduction and murder of his father, Kenneth Odoputa, and his father’s friend, Raphael Ojukwu, in Imo State in 2022.
The actor disclosed that despite his family’s efforts to secure his father’s release, including the payment of ransom to the kidnappers, both men were eventually killed by their abductors.
Odoputa shared the heartbreaking experience in a statement posted on his Instagram page, explaining how the tragedy had left lasting emotional and psychological scars on his family.
Reflecting on the popular expression “May Nigeria never happen to you,” the actor said the words carried a deeply painful meaning for his family because of their personal experience with kidnapping and insecurity.
He recalled that his father was visiting a close friend in eastern Nigeria when they were both abducted. At the time, he had publicly appealed for help while his family prayed and hoped for their safe return.
However, despite paying the demanded ransom, the family received the devastating news that the two men had been murdered.
The actor further explained that the tragedy had affected his mother’s life, as she continued to live with the loss of her husband, while he and his siblings struggled to cope with their father’s absence.
He admitted that although many people had seen him smiling and encouraging others, he had privately endured years of grief.
Odoputa also revealed that the experience negatively affected his health and overall well-being, adding that his faith in God had remained his greatest source of strength.
SNOW TV EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
Odoputa’s heartbreaking account exposes the devastating human cost of kidnapping and insecurity in Nigeria. Particularly disturbing is the reported killing of victims despite their families paying ransom, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of current security measures.
No family should have to endure such trauma simply because a loved one travels or visits another person. Security agencies must strengthen intelligence gathering, rescue operations, and the prosecution of kidnappers. Beyond public condemnations, Nigerians deserve concrete action that protects lives and restores confidence in the country’s security system.
