Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has explained why manager Michael Carrick left him on the bench throughout the club’s Premier League defeat to Bournemouth last month.
The Portuguese midfielder was an unused substitute when United suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, sparking speculation about a possible disagreement between him and the manager.
The development came shortly after Fernandes reportedly criticized Carrick’s tactical approach during Manchester United’s Champions League encounter against Como.
However, the United captain has now played down suggestions of a personal dispute, insisting that his omission was based on his performances rather than any disagreement with the manager.
Speaking to CBS Sports Golazo after captaining Manchester United to a 3-2 Champions League victory over AS Roma on Tuesday, Fernandes said Carrick believed he was not performing well enough to deserve a place in the starting lineup.
“The manager took a decision to make me be on the bench because I wasn’t performing. That’s fair,” Fernandes explained.
His comments suggest that the decision was a technical one, rather than a disciplinary measure arising from the reported tension between both men.
Following his return to the starting lineup, Fernandes will now be hoping to maintain his impressive leadership role and help United secure another victory when they take on Aston Villa this weekend.
SNOW TV EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
Fernandes’ response demonstrates a professional attitude towards managerial decisions, particularly his willingness to accept responsibility for his performances. At a club as demanding as Manchester United, competition for starting positions and tactical disagreements are inevitable.
However, maintaining mutual respect between players and the manager is essential for team stability. Carrick’s challenge will be to get the best out of his captain while ensuring that individual disagreements do not affect collective performance. Ultimately, results and consistency on the pitch will determine whether the relationship remains productive.
