The campaign convoy of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, has reportedly come under attack by suspected political thugs during campaign engagements in Kebbi State.
The incident was made public on Thursday, November 5, by Royalty Uso, Atiku’s Special Adviser on New Media, who alleged that the attackers blocked the campaign convoy, pelted vehicles with stones, and deliberately targeted members of the media team accompanying the presidential candidate.
According to Uso, the attack went beyond an attempt to disrupt the campaign, as the assailants allegedly focused on destroying equipment used by the camera and video crew to document the political activities.
He disclosed that several pieces of equipment, including cameras, video recording devices, tripods, and other essential working tools, were smashed during the incident. The damage reportedly left the media team unable to continue providing live coverage of the campaign activities in the state.
In a post on X, Uso accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of sponsoring the attackers, describing the incident as a deliberate attempt to intimidate the ADC campaign team, discourage supporters, and prevent Nigerians from seeing the events surrounding Atiku’s political engagements.
He alleged that the attackers were not interested in stealing valuables but had specifically targeted the media crew and its equipment to disrupt the documentation and broadcast of the campaign.
“The thugs did not come to steal. They came to destroy. They targeted our cameras and video crew because they did not want Nigerians to see what is happening here in Kebbi,” Uso stated.
The ADC campaign team also described the incident as an attempt to silence its media coverage and create an atmosphere of fear around the candidate’s political activities.
However, the allegation of APC sponsorship was made by Atiku’s aide, and no independent confirmation or response from the ruling party was contained in the report.
The development has raised fresh concerns about political intimidation, the safety of campaign teams and journalists, and the growing need for political parties to conduct their activities without violence or harassment.
With political activities gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the incident underscores the importance of protecting political freedom, ensuring the safety of journalists and allowing opposition parties to campaign without fear of attack.
Political disagreements, observers would argue, should be settled through democratic engagement and the ballot box rather than intimidation and destruction of property.
