The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has announced plans to organize a special farewell ceremony for Cristiano Ronaldo following the football legend’s decision to retire from international football after more than two decades representing his country.
The federation paid an emotional tribute to the 41-year-old forward, acknowledging his enormous contributions to Portuguese football and assuring him that his connection with the national team would remain permanent.
In a message shared on its official X account on Thursday, November 5, the FPF wrote: “This will always be your home.”
The planned farewell is expected to celebrate a remarkable international career that saw Ronaldo become Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of the most influential figures in the history of the national team.
Ronaldo leaves international football with an extraordinary record of 146 goals in 234 appearances, making him the highest-scoring player in men’s international football.
His greatest achievements with Portugal include captaining the country to its first-ever European Championship title at Euro 2016, a historic victory that ended decades of waiting for a major international trophy.
He also led Portugal to triumph in the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019 and the 2025 edition of the competition, further cementing his legacy as one of the country’s most successful captains.
Beyond the goals and silverware, Ronaldo’s influence extended to an entire generation of Portuguese footballers and supporters. His consistency, leadership, and determination helped transform Portugal into a regular contender at major international tournaments.
His international journey began with his senior debut in 2003, making his retirement the end of a remarkable 23-year chapter in Portuguese football.
Although he is stepping away from international duty, Ronaldo is expected to continue his club career with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also remains determined to reach the remarkable milestone of 1,000 official career goals, having reportedly scored 985 at the time of the latest career update.
The FPF’s planned tribute will offer Portugal an opportunity to celebrate a player whose achievements go beyond statistics and trophies.
While Ronaldo may have played his final game for the national team, the federation’s message makes one thing clear: his place in Portuguese football history and his connection with the country will remain long after his international career has ended.
